Sweet Somethings
“Diamonds are the best expression of love” according to advertisers. I’m not an expert on diamonds but when my husband surprised me with a diamond ring on our 14th wedding anniversary, it was a grand expression of his love. Amazement and awe left me speechless, which is a miraculous feat in and of itself. I looked up into his dark, brown eyes, smiled and asked, “Is it real?” This time amazement and awe left him speechless! “Of course it’s real,” he insisted. My next question remains unanswered to this day. “How much did it cost?”
I slipped the ring on my finger and held it at an arm’s length to marvel at the unexpected gift from afar, but saw the magnificence hidden deep within the heart of the gem when I looked intently into the face of the diamond. In the same way the facets of a diamond give it character, depth and dimension, the facets of my ring reflected the heart of my husband. Each facet shimmered with the love, faithfulness, kindness and goodness of my man in ways I had never seen before. The sparkling gem caught my eye but Jim Weber captured my heart.
Like diamonds, real love is a rare and costly treasure. It grabs our attention and captures hearts. We see it with our eyes yet words fail to describe the depths and dimension of its magnificence and beauty. Mariah Carey sings the burning question of the human heart. “I want to know what love is. I want you to show me.” God answered the burning question of our hearts when He shined the light of glory through His rare and precious diamond of love to bedazzle us in First Corinthians. Each ray of light illuminates a facet of God’s kind of love.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered,
it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts,
always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails.
1 Corinthians 13:4-8
Valentine’s Day brings opportunities for unique expressions of love for friends and lovers through heartwarming cards and personal gifts. The soft scent of rose petals and whispers of sweet nothings may fill the night air tonight but nothing captivates the human heart like the fragrance of God’s Sweet Somethings spoken to us from His Word. His unique expression of love is unrivaled. Every description of God’s love is an action word. In fact, the grandest expression of love was demonstrated for all to see when He gave His life for us on the cross so we could see what real is and what it does. God’s Sweet Somethings in First Corinthians are not only endearing; they are enduring. Long after the scent of rose petals and whispers of sweet nothings fade away, God’s words of love remain.
How can you sweeten the bitterness when you are single and waiting for that special someone to share your heart? How do you celebrate when the opportunity to express your affection with loved ones is gone? We can make Valentine’s Day sweeter when we open God’s heartwarming letter of love written for us in His Word where His unrivaled, unending love is on display in the face of Jesus from cover to cover.
Perhaps you or someone you know needs to know this kind of love. My prayer today is for God to bedazzle us with a fresh glimpse of His rare and costly love. May the whispers of God’s Sweet Somethings make our hearts burn within as we contemplate the many facets of His great love that burns like a blazing fire and a mighty flame that can never be quenched. (Song of Songs 8:6-7)
Be Blessed!
